What if I don’t Like the Smell of an EO?

Yesterday, for the third time this week, I was asked “What does it mean (or, What do I do) if I don’t like the smell of an essential oil?” So, that was a sign to me that I should discuss this here! There are two aspects to this: When you have chosen an essence because it is very helpful for what you are addressing…but you really don’t like the smell, OR when you are exploring essence(s) you want to use for a particular issue, and you like the smell of some, but not others.

One of the axioms in medicinal aromatherapy is “If you don’t like the smell of an essence, you probably need it!” — the thought being, you are likely “out of harmony” in a key area it addresses, and so the smell doesn’t seem right to you. Case in point. A number of years ago, several alternative health professionals advised me that my thyroid was under-active. Myrtle is the “Queen” of the thyroid, so, I wanted to work with her. Unfortunately, I REALLY didn’t like the smell of any of the three Myrtles we carry, and I was going to be putting it near my face. I wasn’t very happy about it, but I persevered.

After using Myrtle cineoliferum for 4-6 weeks, I remember thinking “What was my problem with Myrtle? She smells wonderful!” Then I laughed, realizing MY chemistry had changed, not hers, and now I enjoyed her aroma…because my thyroid was now in balance. If you don’t want to work through it, like I did, you can always add an essence whose aroma you love to the equation, and layer it over the one you don’t like. What works even better is if you like one that also supports the issue you are addressing. In the case of thyroid balance, Blue Spruce is another that is effective. It has a gorgeous aroma, and could be one you would layer over Myrtle to get the best of both worlds!

On the other hand, if a number of essences would be equally effective for what you are trying to address, my philosophy is to go with one whose aroma you adore…you are more likely to USE one you really love, which is much more likely to produce results, versus going with one you dislike…and therefore are less likely to use consistently!
