In Sickness and in Health

It’s summer…and my daughter, who creates incredibly beautiful wedding cakes, is busy because this is officially “wedding season.” Talking with her about her work reminded me of that solemn vow many of us took with our beloved…to be there “in sickness and in health.” While many consider that the equivalent of “in good times and bad”…being the aromatherapist that I am…I see the meaning a little differently.

So, today I’d like to have you consider how you view aromatherapy…and your personal use of essential oils…in this context. Do you primarily see the essences as something necessary for when you are sick or have an accident (burn, bruise, or sting, for example), or do you EQUALLY see them as something necessary for when you are healthy?

Barry, Cynthia and I were talking about this when I was recently in Arizona for my monthly office visit. Our initial and sustained focus at Wisdom of the Earth has always been MEDICINAL AROMATHERAPY. That is the primary focus of our classes, and how we chose to differentiate our business from those who focus on blends, making bath salts or candles, etc. Because there has been so much fear in the US, Canada, and other parts of the world regarding speaking out about the powerful medicine represented in plant and tree essences, that was something we felt called to address honestly and candidly.

In so doing, however, we have conveyed the message that their primary purpose is physical or emotional health as opposed to their equally incredible emotional and spiritual purposes. I remember one couple in our Level 1 Certification class remarking that they wanted to use the essences “to get healthy enough so that we won’t have to use them anymore.” As you might imagine, that comment sparked a lively and enlightening discussion in the class about using the essences “in sickness and in health”.

In that discussion, I likened using the essences when we are healthy to eating healthy foods, meditating and exercising when we are healthy to PROTECT AND DEEPEN that health! I likened their use to surrounding ourselves with people, places and things that uplift us…flowers, nature, music, love, animals, waterfalls, majestic mountains, etc. These are the things that make us happy, inspire us, fulfill us, enlighten us…and, in so doing, make us healthy on all three levels – physical, emotional and spiritual.

So, celebrate your health with 10 drops of Wild Tansy on your crown chakra; I guarantee you will have an expansive spiritual experience. Celebrate your health with 5 drops of Ylang Ylang over your heart…and feel your heart expand with gratitude and love. Celebrate your health daily with 15-20 drops of Black Cumin to keep your immune system strong and resiliant. And remember, the essences are our companions, our guides, our support system…”in sickness and in health”!
