Agarwood (Oud) Essence 1 of my “Julie & Julia” Inspired Goal to Blog about all 240 of the Wisdom of the Earth Aromatherapy Essences

by | Aug 9, 2009

This is my first entry in my commitment to experience, deeply, all of the Wisdom of the Earth essences…inspired by the movie Julie & Julia (see yesterday’s blog)…and share those experiences with you. Our first essence is Agarwood.

j0433127I want to start with some information about Agarwood…but I am already soooooo feeling its effects, this is not going to be easy! (to be in my head, that is). The botanical name for Agarwood (also known as Oud, and Eaglewood) is Aquilaria agallocha, A. malaccensis. Our essence is from India, and is steam distilled from the resin of Agarwood…an evergreen tree. It is a very expensive essence…very rare, very ancient (mentioned as far back as the 3rd and 7th centuries). Physically, it aids headaches, and is a decongestant of the lymphatic and veinous systems. It is also an ancient aphrodisiac which opens up all of the senses. (This description is from the Wisdom of the Earth Reference Guide)

When I opened the bottle, this incredibly deep, woody aroma totally transfixed me! I closed my eyes, and breathed in deeply. I was moved to put a drop of her on my third eye…the drops were very slow coming..thick (as essential oils go) and amber in color. Hmmmm. Maybe there is something to be learned about patience in this little bottle!!

The very first message I got was “I am the MYSTIC.” It gives me chills to even repeat those words. I felt engulfed in the wisdom of old growth forests…are there any at all left in this country???

I started to put the lid back on the bottle…and the second message I got (with a bit of humor in it) was “bet you can’t eat (just) one!” And sure enough…I just could NOT put that lid back on without taking another couple of drops…one for my upper lip and one for my heart. I needed to feel “saturated” by her.

Her wisdom and her healing power come from being damaged. True, exquisite Agarwood essential oil is the result of the tree being attacked by a fungus…the attack stimulates the natural immune response of the tree…and it produces a resin as a result of the attack. Over time, the color of the wood changes from light tan to a dark, almost black color. In nature, only about 7% of Agarwood trees are infected with the fungus…thus the incredible scarcity of this essence.agarwood

Just think of that…it will certainly get you out of any victim”ness” you might have been feeling…the healing essence is the result of the attack. The tree takes this devestating invasion and creates a powerful healing substance from it. It doesn’t happen over night, this healing…it comes from being resiliant and transforming hurt into healing. Perhaps this is the LESSON Agarwood has for us…that we have the ability to transform our deepest wounds into forces for good. That, when we are truly healed, we can move beyond the devestations of life and create anew.

I have always felt that we were not created to suffer…but Agarwood is making me take a closer look at that belief. Perhaps we endure periods of suffering to become stronger and to more fully appreciate and value the periods of peace and joy. THAT is more in keeping with my other strongly held belief that ALL of life is to be engaged in and cherished…the pain and the joy…the disappointments and the triumphs. All of life. All cherished.

Thank you Agarwood…for your ancient wisdom and your mystical energy.

Blessings, Audre
