Using EOs with Pets – Separation Anxiety & Cuts

by | May 22, 2011

Lots of questions about pets lately! From, “What EO can I use to help my pet with separation anxiety?” to “How can I calm my pet when there are lightning storms? He’s terrified!” And then there was the story…thanks again, Sam Berne!…about the severe cut over his dog’s eye that healed so quickly, he couldn’t even find it the next day!

On the anxiety front, pets usually respond very well to Lavender. Our Fine Lavender would be excellent for this purpose, but if you have one of our Highland Lavenders, that would be great too. They are more costly, so for this purpose, the Fine would be “fine”!

I would suggest, for an average sized animal, 3-5 drops, applied near the base of the spinal column…just before the tail. Part the hair, and drip them right on the skin, then massage in gently. For very small animals, a couple of drops should suffice, for larger animals, say a German Shepherd or Rottweiler, you may need to use 8-10 drops. This can be done in advance (before you leave for an outing without your pet), or at the time of the event (e.g., a sudden thunderstorm). Repeat if necessary.

With regard to cuts, it’s hard to beat the combination of Helichrysum (my preference would be italicum or arenarium) and Davana for wound healing and scar reduction. Please write to me if you have any stories, with these or other essences, that have worked well with your pets.
